About a year ago, we wrote an article related to a supposed leak stating that Bleach would be returning in 2020. Our debunking of that leak came from the fact that the origins of the poster was non-existent, but there might’ve actually been some truth to it after all. Turns out, in a recent issue of Shonen Jump, the official announcement was made that Bleach‘s anime would finally return to adapt the final major story arc in the manga, the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. We’d like to formally apologize for being off the mark, but as huge Bleach fans ourselves, we’re very happy to be wrong.
According to Anime Research and Intelligence (A.I.R.) on Twitter, the Bleach anime will return in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The first issue of the manga was published in 2001, so it’s very likely that means the anime will return in 2021. The news apparently comes from a new issue of Shonen Jump magazine, which details the return of the Bleach anime along with author Tite Kubo’s other work, Burn the Witch, which will also receive an anime adaptation. It’s unclear at the moment if Studio Pierrot, who previously animated the original Bleach anime, will return to animate the new series.
Originally, the announcement was to be made at the AnimeJapan 2020 event on March 23rd, but sadly that event was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. The announcement will most likely be made on the Bleach 20th Anniversary livestream, happening 8:45 PM EDT (2:45 AM CAT) on March 20th. The livestream will also reveal Tite Kubo’s next manga, with more details to come about the new anime adaptations for Bleach and Burn the Witch as well.
