Disney is showing no signs of slowing down with their Marvel Studios productions. Captain Marvel 2 forms part of this momentum, as the movie is officially in development.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is looking for a female filmmaker to helm the project (Megan McDonnell from Disney+’s WandaVision is currently in the final stages of negotiations), while Disney is aiming to have Captain Marvel 2 in theatres by 2022. The film will also leave the 1990’s behind and take place in the present day.
The writers of last year’s Captain Marvel, which was Marvel’s first female lead film, will not be returning to pen Captain Marvel 2. They are, however, in talks to “remain in the Marvel universe and direct a possible Disney+ series”.
Captain Marvel blitzed to the exclusive $1 Billion spheres when it released in 2019. Placing it in the echelon with Black Panther, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.
